  1. go down to guitar center (or whatever big instrument story you have near you) and play a bunch of stuff. get whatever sounds, plays and feels the best to you for your money.

  2. Well I have two suggestions for you:

The first one would be an epiphone les paul, they sound great for their price (find it locally for about 200-300, I found mine for about 250 on craigslist)

And my second suggestion would be any Ibanez guitar, as they are cheap and sound great for their prices also.

Here is a good Ibanez: http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Ibanez-RG120-Electric-Guitar?sku=519426&src=3WFRWXX&ZYXSEM=0&CAWELAID=31062301

And for any distortion, in my band we use a crybaby, nothing special but they got the job done right:

For an amp, I would go with a marshall but its all your choice. I hoped I helped you out!

  3. A Crybaby distortion pedal would help, and a Line 6 Spider model would be a good addition. Not too much, and 4 settings of different sounding music.

As for the guitar, Epiphone LP would probably be a good cheap guitar. :)
