Is it hard to learn how to play the electric guitar? 16yr old girl and curious?

So i’m thinking of getting an electric guitar, but wondering if it’s super hard to learn a few songs? i’m a girl and 16…and have long fingers if that helps haha. But i want to know from people who actully play it, if it was hard for them?
Also, are the cheap $ 100 electric guitars on eBay alright to start with? (i know i know, i gotta get an amp too)….okay, any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks<3

  1. I think for a goal of “learning a few songs” it is very easy to learn. Cheap guitars are okay if you don’t plan to get serious about it, or plan to buy a better one if you do.

  2. Do you have experience playing acoustic guitar? If so, the electric guitar should come very naturally to you. If you don’t have any guitar experience, I would personally recommend you get an acoustic guitar to start out with. Once you have the acoustic down, you can quickly and easily adjust to the electric without problems, on most occasions.

As for a 100 dollar guitar, only spend that much if it’s absolutely necessary. Cheaper guitars always seem to be more difficult to learn on, maintain, and so on. If you have any guitar shops in your area, I’d go have a look. A lot of times, they will have nice used guitars for a very decent price. Do have someone with you who is experienced with guitars if possible, though.

  3. Guitar is a patience instrument. Hard to get good at, hard to get better at. You really have to love doing it.

If you’re enthusiastic and want a challenge, go for it.

They make great guitars for all budgets.

  4. Hello there,

It is not hard to learn. This is not rocket science. However, it does take desire, dedication and effort. I started playing in 1957. Over the years I have seen hundreds of kids get guitars. Out of every 100 I would guess may 10 actually learn to play decent. Most discover that you do not magically make music when you pick up the guitar and there is work involved in learning how to play. So they quit. Those that really want to play and are willing to put in the effort to learn are the few that stick it out through the learning process.

Whether the cheap guitar is really suitable to play depends on what it is. I see no brand name guitars sell on eBay that are trash. I see good guitars also sell there. If you stick to a well known brand name, you will be safer. Get a used guitar that is in good shape. You will get a better quality guitar for the amount of money you spend. If you like the Strat style guitars, Squier Standard are good. I don’t like the Squier Bullet and Affinity, too cheaply made for my tastes. If you see an 80s vintage Squier those are very good. The 80s Squiers were made in Japan and Korea and are so much better than the current ones made in China and Indonesia. Also the vintage Peaveys are made in the USA and are good guitars. I bought one of mine for $ 40. Also look for a used 1×12 combo amp. Most beginners underestimate the importance of the amp and speakers in your sound. You will sound no better than your speakers. A great guitar played through a lousy amp or lousy speakers will sound lousy. A mediocre guitar played through a good amp and good speakers will sound decent. A combo amp is where the amplifier and speakers are in the same cabinet. 1×12 means it has one 12 inch speaker. The small practice amps have lousy speakers, no matter what brand. I think they make you sound thin and tinny. Look for a 1×12 combo from Vox, Crate, Fender, Peavey, Marshall or Line 6. I have never seen a lousy speaker in a 1×12 from any of those brands. A used 1×12 sells for about the same price as a new small practice amp and they are so much better.

Also get an electronic tuner. They are cheap ($ 10 or less) and make life so much easier.

  5. It should be fairly simple. Buy the guitar and at least a 30w amp or more. That way it’ll sound at least decent. I’ve been playing acoustic guitar for about one year, and i’m to the point were I feel I can play comfortably in front of a small crowd of people. Just remember to use Tabs! Tabs are an easy way to learn songs. Whatever song you wanna learn, google its tab.

  6. Hey.. James here..

It wasn’t until probably the last six months or so that I’ve been able to play the guitar. I’ve always been very interested since a young age considering my dad and his brothers pretty much grew up on the guitar and drums. It’s always been in the family and when I would watch them play they always made it look so easy.. it seemed like almost a natural thing for them. I tried for years to learn how to play… tried to have my father help me, looked to books to teach me, spent hours on youtube watching people try to explain.. etc. Nothing ever really worked. I eventually gave up for a few years then just within the past year or so I became interested in it again when I would see all these girls just going crazy over musicians at shows/concerts… lol. So I started looking online and came across this website .. http://www.guitar.pcti-system.com … which is an online program with videos and the works that teaches everything you need to know to learn how to play.

It’s probably the best tutorial/instructional course I’ve ever seen… I learned how to play the guitar very quickly and now it seems like I can almost play songs by ear.. something my uncle can do. I’m actually planning on tryin to start up a band with a few friends of mine after I get myself a newer more expensive better quality guitar. But I definitely would have never learned it if it wasn’t for that course.

I hope I was of some help to you my friend, and I wish you the best of luck! Rock on.
