Since you’ve posted this under “country Music” I would suggest you take a look at what guitars are being played by the country artists whose styles you like. I would say that Stratocasters and Telecasters dominate the field, although you see the occasional Les Paul.
If you want a solid body guitar, I think a Strat is an excellent all-round choice that is used in many styles of playing. When you mention Stratocaster “packs” are you referring to the guitar and amp package deals? If so, I would agree with your instructor. The packages tend to be low quality “entry level” guitars and a practice amp. If you’re looking for a keeper, plan on spending the entire $ 500 on the guitar and worry about an amp later. Right now, musiciansfriend.com has standard Strats on sale for $ 499. You might also consider the HSS model which has a humbucker rear pickup at the same price. These are both decent quality made-in-Mexico models. ( you’ll need to pay double that for a made in USA model) There is a chain of stores in the U.S. called “Guitar Center” which is the parent company of musiciansfriend.com. Their prices should be comparable. Often you can negotiate better prices at smaller locally owned stores, so shop around. You should try out several models and find what feels best and has a sound you like.
Fender makes a less expensive line called Squier. I have a friend who just bought a Squier Strat which is pretty impressive for the $ 150 it cost him. Just remember that you-get-what-you-pay-for and you did say you are looking for a keeper.
Regarding an amp: you will need one. They can be heavy, especially if you get one that is big enough to play out with. Shipping might be expensive, it’s not exactly carry on luggage! Also the US amps run on different voltage than in Europe. I would suggest looking for an amp on your side of the Atlantic. Vox makes some good ones.
Whatever you end up with, enjoy your visit and happy hunting.
